How the Trial of Aether Works

The Trial of Aether is a seven-stage gauntlet unlocked after completing all six elemental zones and defeating their boss encounters. The entrance is in the Hub basement, behind the portal that the Scholar opens with the Abyssal Key. You must complete all six elemental trials (Flame, Frost, Storm, Earth, Shadow, Light) in any order before the central Trial of Aether becomes accessible.

Each trial has three components: a puzzle section (environmental challenge using the trial's element), a combat gauntlet (waves of element-themed enemies), and a boss encounter (unique trial boss with mechanics not seen anywhere else in the game). You cannot leave a trial once you enter — it is a commitment of approximately 15-25 minutes per trial.

Completing all seven trials awards the Aether Core, a universal weapon and armor infusion that lets your gear adapt its element to whatever enemy you are fighting. This is the single most powerful item in Alabaster Dawn and is required for the true ending on New Game Plus. The Aether Wings cosmetic back item is also awarded — it has no gameplay benefit but is the rarest cosmetic in the game.

TrialRequired ElementSolutionRewardDifficulty
Trial of FlameFireIgnite the four braziers in order: North → East → South → West. Then stand on the central pressure plate for 5 seconds. The Flame Guardian appears — defeat it within 60 seconds using fire-infused weapons only.Flame Heart (Fire weapon infusion), 500 Crystal ShardsEasy
Trial of FrostIceSlide across the frozen floor tiles in a spiral pattern from outer edge to center. Avoid the thaw zones (marked with steam vents). Hit the central ice crystal with 3 charged ice attacks to shatter it. The ice bridge to the reward chamber extends for 15 seconds — sprint across.Frost Core (Ice armor infusion), 750 Crystal ShardsMedium
Trial of StormLightningStand on the three lightning rods in the correct order: tall rod → short rod → broken rod. Each rod must be activated within 3 seconds of the previous one. Once all three are active, the storm barrier drops. Fight waves of Storm Wisps while staying within the electrified safe zone.Storm Shard (Lightning weapon infusion), 600 Crystal ShardsMedium
Trial of EarthEarthPush the four stone blocks onto their matching colored pressure plates. Order matters: red → blue → green → yellow. Blocks pushed in wrong order reset all plates. The final block spawns an Earth Golem — use earth magic to break its stone armor before dealing real damage.Terra Crystal (Earth armor infusion), 800 Crystal ShardsHard
Trial of ShadowShadowNavigate the pitch-black maze. Torches extinguish 2 seconds after you pass them. Follow the sound of whispering — it gets louder as you approach the exit. Shadow Wisps patrol fixed routes — memorize their patterns. The exit guardian requires you to perfect parry 3 shadow projectiles in a row.Void Essence (Shadow weapon infusion), 1,000 Crystal ShardsVery Hard
Trial of LightLightReflect the central light beam onto all 6 crystals using the rotating mirrors. Mirrors rotate clockwise only — plan your sequence backwards. The 6th crystal activates a boss fight against the Light Warden. Stay within the illuminated zones — darkness deals continuous damage.Radiance Core (Light armor infusion), 900 Crystal ShardsHard
Trial of Aether (Final)All 6 ElementsComplete all 6 elemental trials first. Then approach the central chamber. Each phase requires a different element in sequence. Phase 1 (Fire): burn the corruption vines. Phase 2 (Ice): freeze the flowing water to create platforms. Phase 3 (Lightning): power the dormant machinery. Phase 4 (Earth): shatter the stone barriers. Phase 5 (Shadow): navigate the invisible path (use light element to briefly illuminate). Phase 6 (Light): blind the Aether Warden, then attack during its recovery animation. Final phase: use all elements in any order — the Warden adapts to the last element used, so rotate constantly.Aether Core (Universal weapon & armor infusion), Aether Wings (cosmetic back item), 5,000 Crystal ShardsMaster

Trial Preparation Checklist

Before entering any trial, complete this checklist. Trials are high-stakes encounters with no checkpoints — dying means restarting from the beginning. Proper preparation is the difference between a one-shot clear and hours of frustration.

StepActionDetails
1Unlock All 6 Element TomesYou cannot attempt the Trial of Aether without all six element tomes unlocked. Each tome requires completing its associated zone: Fire (Scorched Canyon), Ice (Frozen Tundra), Lightning (Stormspire Facility), Earth (Ashen Depths), Shadow (Shadowveil Crypt), Light (Skyreach Peaks). Each elemental tome boss drops the final page needed.
2Craft Element Resistance TonicsBring at least 3 Element Resistance Tonics per trial. The boss at the end of each trial deals pure elemental damage of its type. A properly matched tonic reduces incoming damage by 30 percent for 90 seconds — enough to cover the entire boss fight. Craft them at the Alchemist in the Hub.
3Upgrade Your Weapon to LegendaryTrial bosses have 50 percent more HP than their overworld counterparts and enrage at 25 percent HP. A Legendary weapon with matching element infusion deals bonus damage. Upgrade at the Blacksmith using Crystal Shards and Zone Essence from the trial's associated zone.
4Stock Phoenix DraftsThe Phoenix Draft auto-revives you once on death with 30 percent HP. Every trial has a limited attempt window — dying without a Phoenix Draft means restarting the entire trial. Bring at least one per trial attempt. Craft using Phoenix Feather (dropped by the Ashen Colossus optional boss) + 3 Crystal Shards.
5Learn Perfect Dash TimingThe 8-frame Perfect Dash Counter is essential for trial boss fights. Dodging through an attack at the exact moment it hits triggers a 1.5 second time-slow window. Practice the timing on overworld enemies before entering any Hard or above trial. The Master trial requires near-perfect dash execution.

Trial Boss Strategy Guide

Each trial boss is a unique encounter with mechanics not found in the overworld. These strategies are battle-tested and will get you through every trial boss on any difficulty.

BossTrialStrategyWeakness
Flame GuardianTrial of FlameStay at mid-range. The Guardian has a 3-hit melee combo with a long recovery after the third swing — that is your punish window. At 50 percent HP, it summons fire pillars that rotate clockwise. Dodge through them with Perfect Dash timing. At 25 percent, the floor ignites in rings — stand in the center ring which stays safe for 3 seconds before the outer rings extinguish.Ice spells interrupt its fire pillar summoning. A single charged Ice Shard cancels the cast animation.
Frost ColossusTrial of FrostThe Colossus is slow but hits in massive AoE arcs. Stay behind it at all times. Its ice breath attack covers 180 degrees in front — dodge to its back during the windup. At 40 percent HP, it creates an ice storm that fills the arena with falling icicles. The safe zones are marked by faint glowing circles on the ground 1 second before impact.Fire spells melt its ice armor, reducing its defense by 50 percent for 10 seconds. Start every punish window with a fire spell before your combo.
Storm CoreTrial of StormThe Storm Core is stationary but surrounded by rotating lightning orbs. Each orb destroyed reduces the Core's defense. The Core fires lightning bolts in 3-round bursts — dodge the first two and punish during the third round's longer recovery. At 30 percent HP, the Core overcharges and the orbs spin 3x faster — switch to ranged attacks.Earth spells ground the lightning orbs, stopping their rotation for 5 seconds. Use this window to destroy them safely.
Aether WardenTrial of AetherThe Aether Warden cycles through all 6 elements in random order. It becomes immune to the last element it used and takes double damage from the element it is weak to (Fire weak to Ice, Ice weak to Fire, Lightning weak to Earth, Earth weak to Lightning, Shadow weak to Light, Light weak to Shadow). After each phase transition, the Warden casts a screen-wide attack that must be Perfect Dashed. The timing is audio-cued — dash on the third chime.Rotate elements every 3 attacks. The Warden adapts to the most recent element used against it. Using all 6 elements in sequence prevents adaptation and keeps it permanently vulnerable.

Puzzle Mechanics by Type

Every trial includes at least two puzzle sections. Understanding the recurring puzzle types will help you solve them quickly without trial and error. Here are all five puzzle mechanics used across the Trial of Aether.

Elemental Glyph Locks

Some trial chambers have doors sealed with elemental glyphs. Hit the door with the matching element (one glyph = one element, multiple glyphs = hit with all elements in sequence). Wrong elements reset the puzzle and deal damage.

Pro Tip: Read glyphs top to bottom, left to right. The 5-second input window per glyph is tight — position yourself before starting.

Mirror Alignment

Light reflection puzzles require you to angle mirrors to direct a beam onto crystals. Mirrors only rotate in one direction (clockwise), so plan your sequence backwards from the target crystal to the light source.

Pro Tip: Count the number of clicks for each mirror position. Write it down. Trial of Light has a 6-mirror puzzle that requires at least 24 correct rotations in sequence.

Pressure Plate Sequences

Multiple pressure plates must be activated in the correct order. Standing on the wrong plate resets all plates. The correct order is always hinted in the environment — wall carvings, torch colors, or ceiling constellations.

Pro Tip: Look up. Most pressure plate puzzles have their sequence carved into the ceiling. The camera does not auto-look-up, so many players miss this.

Timed Parkour Sections

Platforming sections with disappearing platforms, moving walls, and elemental hazards. The timer is generous but the punishment for falling is death (not just damage).

Pro Tip: Use wall-jump to skip entire platform chains. Many sections have a wall-jump shortcut that bypasses 3-4 platforms. The developers intended these shortcuts.

Invisible Path Navigation

The Trial of Shadow and Trial of Aether both feature sections where the floor is invisible. You must navigate using environmental clues — sound, air currents, and brief light flashes.

Pro Tip: Throw a light spell ahead to reveal platforms for 1 second. Or listen for the distinct hum that gets louder the further off-path you step.

Trial of Aether — Step-by-Step Walkthrough

The final Trial of Aether is a marathon, not a sprint. It combines all six elements in a single gauntlet with no breaks between phases. Here is the complete phase-by-phase walkthrough.

Phase 1: Fire — Burning Path

The chamber fills with corruption vines that must be burned with fire spells. Stand on the stone platforms — the ground between them is lava. Burn the vines in order of size: smallest first (they grow if ignored), largest last. The vine boss at the end has three weak points that must all be burning simultaneously. Use Inferno Wave to hit all three at once. Time to complete: 4 minutes.

Phase 2: Ice — Frozen Crossing

Rapid water currents prevent swimming across. Freeze sections of water with ice spells to create temporary platforms. Platforms last 8 seconds — move quickly. Thorn-covered ice blocks must be destroyed with melee before you can stand on the platform beneath. The ice serpent patrols the water — if it touches you, you are pulled under and must restart the phase. Time to complete: 3 minutes.

Phase 3: Lightning — Power Grid

Four dormant machines surround the central console. Hit each machine with a lightning spell to power it. The machines power on in sequence — you have 10 seconds between activations. A powered machine emits an electric field that damages you if you stand on the metal floor nearby. Route your path to avoid live machines. Once all four are powered, the central elevator activates. Time to complete: 3 minutes.

Phase 4: Earth — Stone Maze

A labyrinth of stone walls. The walls shift every 30 seconds — memorize the pattern (it repeats on a 2-minute cycle). Stone barriers block certain paths and require earth spells to shatter. The Stone Golem patrols the maze — it cannot be killed, only stunned with earth attacks for 10 seconds. Find the four exit switches hidden in the corners and activate them all. Time to complete: 5 minutes.

Phase 5: Shadow — Invisible Path

The floor vanishes. You must cross a series of invisible platforms over a bottomless void. The path is revealed briefly by light spells (2 second illumination). Shadow clones of yourself attack from the darkness — hit them with shadow attacks to dispel them. The correct path can be mapped by throwing light orbs forward and watching where they stop — they float above solid platforms. Time to complete: 4 minutes.

Phase 6: Light — Blind the Warden

The Aether Warden appears for the first time. It is invulnerable to all attacks except during its recovery animation after being blinded. Use light spells to charge the six crystals around the arena. When all six are charged, a massive light burst blinds the Warden for 8 seconds. This is your only damage window. The Warden attacks with sweeping beams during the charging phase — stay mobile and dodge perpendicular to the beams. Time to complete: 6 minutes.

Final Phase: Elemental Chaos

The Warden is now vulnerable but adapts to the last element used against it. Rotate through all six elements — use each element no more than 3 times before switching. The Warden casts arena-wide attacks that can only be avoided with Perfect Dash (listen for the audio cue — three chimes, dash on the third). At 10 percent HP, the Warden enters a desperation phase where it uses every element at once — the arena becomes chaos. Use your most damaging element (the one you have practiced most) and burn it down. Surviving this phase is more important than dealing optimal damage. Time to complete: 5 minutes.

Expert Tips for Trial Mastery

Element Order Matters

Complete trials in this order: Flame → Storm → Frost → Earth → Light → Shadow → Aether. This order introduces mechanics in increasing complexity and ensures you have the right infusions for each subsequent trial's boss.

Weapon Swap Speed Is Critical

The Trial of Aether requires rapid element switching. Equip a staff with multiple element tomes and practice hot-swapping in combat. The difference between a 1-second swap and a 3-second menu swap is often the difference between clearing and dying.

Co-op Trial Strategy

In co-op, divide element responsibility. Player 1 handles Fire/Earth/Light. Player 2 handles Ice/Lightning/Shadow. In the final Trial of Aether, Player 1 blinds and debuffs the Warden while Player 2 deals damage. Communication is critical — call out element switches.

The Abyssal Sovereign Connection

If you defeat the Abyssal Sovereign before completing the Trial of Aether, the Warden gains additional mechanics and higher stats. The intended difficulty assumes you complete the trials first. Doing the trials after the final boss is significantly harder — consider this a challenge mode.

Practice Mode Exists

After attempting any trial once, a practice mode unlocks at the Scholar. Practice mode lets you replay puzzle sections without combat and boss phases with infinite HP. Use it to learn mechanics without the pressure of permadeath or resource loss.
