Alabaster Dawn follows a structured Act-based progression system. The game is divided into four Acts, each containing one or two zones. Every zone introduces a new element type, a new movement ability, and a boss fight that gates progression to the next area. You cannot progress to the next zone without defeating the current zone boss, making boss preparation critical at every stage.
Between zones, you return to the Hub — a central safe area with all crafting stations and NPCs. The Hub is where you upgrade gear, infuse weapons with new elements, craft consumables, and respec ability points. Treat the Hub as your home base. Every time you return from a zone, spend your crystal shards immediately on upgrades before heading out again. Nothing is worse than dying with a full inventory of unspent resources.
The progression system has two平行 tracks: story progression (mandatory boss fights) and exploration progression (optional bosses, side quests, hidden areas). Story progression alone will get you to the end credits in 25-30 hours. Completionist progression with all side content takes 45-55 hours. Both are valid ways to experience the game. However, skipping optional bosses locks you out of legendary weapons and permanent stat upgrades that make the endgame significantly more manageable.
This table lists every progression stage from prologue to endgame. Estimated times are for a first-time player on Normal difficulty.

Not all unlocks are created equal. Some abilities are game-changing and should be prioritized immediately. Others can wait until you have spare ability points. This section covers the optimal unlock order.
Movement abilities are the most important unlocks in the game. Dash should be your very first ability point investment — it grants invincibility frames and faster traversal. Wall-jump and Double Jump open up entirely new areas and shortcuts. Aerial Recovery prevents fall damage deaths in vertical zones. Sprint-Slide is a quality-of-life upgrade that makes traversal faster but is not essential for progression. Prioritize mobility over damage in the ability tree until you have at least Dash, Wall-jump, and Double Jump unlocked.
The Blacksmith becomes available immediately after the prologue. Do not sleep on this. Infusion is the single most impactful system for combat effectiveness. A weapon with the correct element infusion deals 2x damage and applies stagger. The wrong element can result in healing the enemy. Visit the Blacksmith after every zone clear to update your infusions. Basic infusion costs 10 elemental essences. Upgraded infusions cost rare essences from elite enemies and bosses.
The Alchemy system unlocks after visiting the Alchemist NPC in the Hub post-prologue. Alchemy allows you to craft buff potions (damage up, defense up, element resistance), healing items, and elemental grenades. A fully upgraded Alchemy tree adds approximately 25 percent more DPS through consumable stacking. The first three Alchemy nodes are cheap and pay off immediately. Prioritize the Damage Potion recipe first, then Element Resistance, then Healing Upgrade. Alchemy is especially critical for boss fights where sustain matters more than burst damage.
| Priority | When to Unlock | Why Important | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Dash | After prologue, first ability point | Invincibility frames, faster traversal, essential for boss survival | 1 ability point |
| 2. Wall-jump | After Vermillion Forest boss | Access to hidden areas, vertical exploration, shortcuts | 2 ability points |
| 3. Double Jump | After Coral Depths boss | Reach high platforms, cross wide gaps, aerial combat mobility | 2 ability points |
| 4. Aerial Recovery | After Frozen Tundra boss | Recover from knockback in mid-air, prevent fall damage deaths | 2 ability points |
| 5. Blacksmith Infusion | Immediately after prologue | Customize weapon elements, double damage against weaknesses | Crystal shards + elemental essences |
| 6. Alchemy Bench | After prologue, visit Alchemist NPC | Craft buff potions, healing items, elemental resist gear | Crystal shards + herbs |
| 7. Memory Altar (Respec) | After Shadowveil Crypt, talk to Scholar | Respec ability points, experiment with builds, optimize for endgame | 50 crystal shards per respec point |
| 8. Co-op Mode | After Stormspire Facility, interact with Signal Fire | 2-player online co-op, shared loot, enemy scaling 1.6x | None, unlocked automatically |
Alabaster Dawn features four difficulty settings that dramatically change the combat experience. Story Mode is for players who want to experience the narrative without mechanical challenge. Normal is the intended experience. Hard adds new enemy attack patterns and extra boss phases. Nightmare is exclusively for New Game Plus and represents the ultimate challenge.
On Hard difficulty, enemies gain 50 percent more health and 30 percent more damage. More importantly, bosses gain an additional phase at 10 percent health that features new attacks not seen in Normal. Nightmare difficulty doubles enemy health and increases damage by 70 percent. One-hit protection (which prevents instant death from full health) is disabled on Nightmare, meaning a single mistake at full health can still be fatal if the attack deals enough damage.
Difficulty can be changed at any time from the Options menu. However, this only affects future encounters — already-defeated bosses will not respawn with adjusted stats. Choose your difficulty at the start and commit to it for the most consistent experience. Changing difficulty mid-playthrough is allowed but may result in trivializing or over-challenging certain sections.
| Difficulty | Enemy HP | Enemy Damage | Recommended For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story Mode | 50% of normal | 50% of normal | New to action RPGs, want to focus on story | Bosses have fewer phases. Some optional content unavailable. |
| Normal (Default) | 100% | 100% | Standard experience, balanced challenge | All content available. Bosses have full phase counts. |
| Hard | 150% | 130% | Experienced action RPG players | Enemies gain new attack patterns. Bosses gain extra phase at 10% HP. |
| Nightmare (NG+) | 200% | 170% | Completionists, challenge runners | Only available in New Game Plus. One-hit protection disabled. |
In Alabaster Dawn, XP is tied to enemy kills but crystal shards are the real progression currency. You need crystal shards for gear crafting, infusion upgrades, Alchemy recipes, and ability unlocks. Prioritize farming crystal shards over grinding XP. The best crystal shard farming spot is the Abyssal Rift endgame zone, where enemies drop 15-25 shards each. In early game, break every crystal shard node you see in the environment — they respawn after checkpoint rest.
Side quests in Alabaster Dawn are not filler content. Each side quest grants an ability point, substantial crystal shards, and often a unique reward like an accessory or weapon recipe. The side quests in Vermillion Forest are missable if you defeat the zone boss without completing them. Always clear all side quests in a zone before fighting the zone boss. The XP and rewards will make the boss fight significantly easier.
After defeating the Abyssal Sovereign and unlocking New Game Plus, you can rematch any boss from the Boss Rematch terminal in the Hub. Boss rematches are the most efficient way to farm high-tier materials and legendary weapon recipes in the endgame. Each boss rematch grants the boss's unique drops plus bonus crystal shards. The Abyssal Sovereign rematch on Nightmare difficulty drops 500-800 crystal shards per clear plus a guaranteed legendary weapon recipe.
Follow the Acts in order: Prologue → Vermillion Forest → Coral Depths → Frozen Tundra → Stormspire Facility → Ashen Quarry (optional) → Skyreach Peaks (optional) → Shadowveil Crypt → Abyssal Rift. The optional bosses (Ashen Colossus and Skyreach Seraph) can be skipped but grant legendary loot and permanent upgrades that make the endgame significantly easier. Tackle them after Stormspire before moving to Act IV.
Trials of Aether are endgame roguelite challenges unlocked after defeating the Abyssal Sovereign. You should be at least level 50 with a fully upgraded legendary weapon and complete element infusion set before attempting them. The trials are brutally difficult and feature permadeath within each run. Attempting them too early is a waste of resources. Farm crystal shards in the Abyssal Rift endgame zone first.
Yes, you can change difficulty at any time from the Options menu. However, changing to a lower difficulty does not refund progress or make already-defeated bosses respawn with fewer phases. The difficulty setting primarily affects enemy stats and boss phase counts going forward. Nightmare difficulty only unlocks in New Game Plus and cannot be accessed on a first playthrough.
You receive 1 ability point per level up to level 50, for a total of 50 points. Boss kills grant an additional point (8 bosses = 8 points). Completing side quests grants 1 point each (approximately 15 side quests). The Lich Heart from Shadowveil Lich grants a permanent +1 ability point. In total, you can have around 74 ability points in a completionist run, enough to fully upgrade two ability trees with points left over.
